Songs.pk, a popular site that lets you download copyrighted music for free, will be blocked in India, as per a Kolkatta high court ruling.
At the time of posting, the site was accessible.
“Two industry bodies and one music company have sought a legal restraint on 11 companies to block access to the music website www.songs.pk.
Phonographic Performance Ltd, The Indian Music Industry, and Sagarika Music Pvt Ltd are seeking a restraint on Internet access to download, stream, disseminate, and reproduce copyright music on this site, according to a public notice.” — reports Jagran
All ISPs have been ordered to block access to the website. How effective the blockage will be, is yet to be seen.
As a matter of fact, this is not the only site that lets users download music for free. So maybe, more such sites will come under the music industry’s radar, and be banned. This is a win for the anti-piracy movement. Or maybe not. There are always other sources for downloading free music, which are more reliable, and safe. For ex.- the bit-torrent network.
I have never met anyone, yet, who actually pays for recorded music. How do you get your music? Have you ever paid for it? Let us know in the comments.
